Yujin Lee translates Western fairy tales through the format of chaekgado. The pictorial space is filled with brushes, ink, books, and still-life objects, maintaining the distinctive perspective of chaekgado—one in which a vanishing point seems to appear, yet the surface remains closed and planar. Titles such as Beauty and the Beast or Cinderella evoke familiar Western fairy tales, but the narratives themselves cannot be directly identified within the works, as Lee reconstructs these stories through Korean visual forms. The “beauty” appears as a Korean woman wearing hanbok and gache, while the “beast” is transformed into an animal bearing the patterns of a Korean tiger. Rather than simply juxtaposing East and West, Lee reweaves the identity of the narrative through Korean symbols within a pictorial system that is both orderly and subtly uncanny.

Fusion today permeates everyday life, including food, clothing, and shelter. Fusion refers to a culture of new harmony that transcends fixed conventions by blending heterogeneous elements. In painting, fusion does not merely signify the physical hybridization of materials or techniques; it must form images and generate narratives.

The Mini Moon Jar series extends Lee’s earlier works, which connect subjects of different sensibilities through the visual codes of genre painting, folk painting, and chaekgado. This body of work, which she calls “Fusion-hwa,” encompasses three elements: the moon jar, whose generous form—seemingly capable of holding anything—and milky-white simplicity embody a distinctly Korean sensibility; a small bird, Western in character and free in spirit, reminiscent of Andersen’s fairy tales or Disney’s animated fairies; and the delicate blue patterns that draw together these heterogeneous images to produce meaning.
